My main skill sets are to quickly establish to establish a rapport with the patient quickly and to establish how empowered they wish to be in managing their care and tailoring my advice and treatment plan accordingly.
For example, some patients want me to lead the way in terms of making the management plan. Others want to feel more in control over whether or not they should take a medication or not. I want to reach these decisions on a mutual basis and explain to the patient what are the advantages and disadvantages of either approach- for example, having a test or procedure on the heart versus pursuing conservative, or medical therapy.
