What is chest pain?

Chest pain can come in many different forms and has many different causes – some benign and some serious. Either way, it should never be ignored – even during the lockdown.

Chest pain can be a sign of several underlying issues, but it is by far the most common symptom of heart disease. However, some patients have heart disease without chest pain.

What is chest pain?

Chest pain can be felt in many different forms and can range in severity from person to person. There are a number of different causes for chest pain, some of which are of little concern but a few that can be serious.

Chest pain is the most common symptom of heart disease and it should never be ignored. Investigating chest pain can lead to diagnosing heart disease early and institution of appropriate management strategies.

Chest pain can cause many different sensations depending on what is triggering the symptom in the first place.

Chest pain as a sign of heart disease can feel like:

  • A dull ache or discomfort in the chest
  • Heaviness or tightness in the chest
  • A weight on the chest
  • A sharp stabbing sensation in the chest
  • Pressure or pain going up the neck and jaw
  • Pain in the gum
  • Pain in the arm (especially the left side)

There are a number of body structures and organs within the chest and chest pain can be caused by:

  • ‘Heartburn’ or gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)
  • Muscle or bone pain
  • Anxiety and panic attacks
  • Lung conditions
  • Shingles
  • Heart disease including angina and heart attacks

Chest pain is the most common symptom of heart disease, although some patients can have heart disease even without chest pain.

Discomfort, heaviness or tightness in the centre of the chest, particularly on exertion, can be a symptom of angina. Angina is caused by a narrowed coronary artery causing inadequate blood supply to the heart muscle.

Chest pain is a worrying symptom and cause stress and anxiety. Ruling out heart disease can relieve this stress and anxiety. However, it is important to investigate chest pain with an expert to evaluate if it represents underlying heart disease.

It can be challenging to know if your chest pain is due to underlying heart disease. Our expert Cardiologists will take a detailed clinical history and perform a physical examination of your cardiovascular system. They will also perform a number of important tests to ascertain if the chest pain is serious and formulate a tailored management plan for you.
