How does your socioeconomic status affect your heart health?

Consultant Cardiologist Joban Sehmi discusses the effect of your socioeconomic status on your heart health.

Socioeconomic status is strongly linked with your health, and in particular, it is most important for heart disease. When we talk about socioeconomic status, this refers to your education levels, your income, your occupation, and your environment, namely the neighbourhood in which you live.

We know that people of low socioeconomic status are more likely to have heart disease than those of higher socioeconomic status.

The exact reasons for this are not entirely clear. It is postulated that people of lower socioeconomic status are more likely to be smokers, and that can contribute. Also, wealthier people are more likely to buy healthier foods, have gym memberships, and lead a more healthy lifestyle.

I strongly urge you to take our heart disease online self-test to assess your risk of developing heart disease in the future. It will take you less than five minutes and will give you a good idea if you are at increased risk and whether or not you need to see a specialist.
