What do the results of cardiac MRI tell us?

Consultant cardiologist Dr Joban Sehmi explains what the results of a cardiac MRI tell us

The cardiac MRI is a very specialist test that gives a wealth of information about the health of your heart. It is by far the best way of assessing the structures within the heart and assessing heart function.

The real strength of MRI is to look for scarring which can give your doctor some information about some of the symptoms you’re having and some of the reasons why your heart may not be working well. The MRI is also a very strong way of assessing the valves within the heart and looking for communications between the right and left side of the heart.

Lastly, an MRI, allows you to assess structures other than the heart, such as the lungs and the bag in which the heart sits the pericardium. All this information can be put together and with your symptoms, allows your doctor to come to an accurate diagnosis.

One of the other results that may be forthcoming from an MRI is in patients who may have experienced a heart attack. An MRI is very useful in this situation because it allows us to assess the heart muscle for the extent of scarring. For example, if the heart is very scarred, then we know that the cardiologist should not send you for bypass surgery or stenting. If the heart muscle looks nice and healthy, then we know patients are likely to benefit from surgery or a stent should this be required.
