How long does stress echocardiography take?

Consultant cardiologist Ahamed Elgahamax reveals how long a stress echocardiography usually takes.

At Many Beats, we run stress echo almost on a daily basis. Therefore, it is fairly easy to have the test either on the same day or next day. The test itself takes about 40 minutes. You will spend in the department about an hour by the time you get in and get hooked to the machine and so on.

Most patients spend about 9 to 12 minutes on the treadmill. That’s usually enough to get the heart stressed to the level where we can acquire the images to get the information we need. However, from the beginning to the end, it’s about 40 minutes…

Live a longer and healthier life

Get an appointment and we’ll test your heart so we can map out a plan to give you the best chance of maximising your longevity

The results are often available immediately or within 24 hours. The test itself does not hurt at all. It’s simply walking on the treadmill machine and then when the heart reaches a certain level of stress we acquire images using ultrasound technology. Therefore, it’s a very safe and painless test.

I strongly urge you to take our heart disease online self-test to assess your risk of developing heart disease in the future. It will take you less than five minutes and will give you a good idea if you are at increased risk and whether or not you need to see a specialist.
