What is heart disease?

Heart disease remains the commonest cause of death in the UK population, and it’s also a big problem in the Western world as a whole.

Traditionally heart disease was thought of as being a problem of the coronary arteries, the arteries supplying the heart muscle of the heart. It can often cause heart attacks, but actually, heart disease is much more than that.

It extends to the heart valves, the heart rhythm, the heart muscle, and all of these can be affected in heart disease and can all present in very different ways. Typically you can get chest pain or tightness in the chest, breathlessness, palpitations, lightheadedness and even blackouts, which are common presentations of heart disease.

And equally, there are lots of different ways of investigating heart disease as well. Some very simple tests and more invasive tests can come into play later on if necessary.
