Why should athletes and competitors have their hearts tested?

Consultant cardiologist Dr. Navin Chandra Navtej S. Chahal explains why you should have a heart health test if you are an athlete.

I have a specialist interest in the management of athletes. I did a higher degree in sports cardiology at the University of London and met a lot of elite athletes. Both national and international organizations recommend a screening of athletes before participating in regular sport, which includes the International Olympic Committee and FIFA. Large international cardiology societies, including the European Society of Cardiology and the American Heart Association, also recommend this.

Live a longer and healthier life

Get an appointment and we’ll test your heart so we can map out a plan to give you the best chance of maximising your longevity

If you’re an athletic individual or an elite athlete, you should have an evaluation of your heart to make sure you are safe to proceed with endurance sports

Endurance sports do affect the structure and function of the heart in the short-term. There is research showing that this can lead to changes in the heart later on in life as well.

I strongly urge you to take our heart disease online self-test to assess your risk of developing heart disease in the future. It will take you less than five minutes and will give you a good idea if you are at increased risk and whether or not you need to see a specialist.
