Are you planning to run a marathon? You should get your heart health tested first

Consultant cardiologist Dr. Navin Chandra explains why you should get your heart health tested before running a marathon.

Any form of exercise is fantastic for your health and mental wellbeing in general, and that includes going for brisk walks or even long-distance and endurance sports. Particularly with marathon running, we sometimes forget that this is one of the most ultimate tests of endurance activity in sport, and it shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Even an experienced runner, in my opinion, should have their heart tested to check that there are no concerns with the heart, from a structural and functional perspective. The tests will also ensure the heart’s working well and that you’re in good shape to proceed with a high-intensity endurance activity…

Live a longer and healthier life

Get an appointment and we’ll test your heart so we can map out a plan to give you the best chance of maximising your longevity

The heart is similar to any muscle in the body.

The heart needs to be looked after and trained appropriately. It needs to be able to handle being pushed when you need to push it. I think doing that in a safe, sensible way by having it checked out by a specialist in the field is a very good way of starting that process.

I strongly urge you to take our heart disease online self-test to assess your risk of developing heart disease in the future. It will take you less than five minutes and will give you a good idea if you are at increased risk and whether or not you need to see a specialist.
