Is High Blood Pressure a Sign or Symptom of Heart Disease?

Consultant cardiologist Dr. Navtej Chahal explains what high blood pressure means

Having high blood pressure is very important to identify. Often, patients have absolutely no symptoms, so it is very difficult to know that a problem may even be present.

Blood pressure is both a sign and a symptom of heart disease.

The most common form of high blood pressure occurs because of stiffness within the blood vessels of the heart and body. This has many adverse effects.

Once the blood vessels stiffen, fat is deposited within the linings of the blood vessels, which can predispose someone to a heart attack or a stroke.

Live a longer and healthier life

Book an appointment and we’ll test your heart so we can map out a plan to give you the best chance of maximising your longevity

When the blood vessels of the body are stiff, the heart has to work incredibly hard, and as a result, may fail over time. High blood pressure in young people is very abnormal and can be a symptom rather than a sign of a problem within the heart, or elsewhere within the body.

I strongly urge you to take our heart disease online self-test to assess your risk of developing heart disease in the future. It will take you less than five minutes and will give you a good idea if you are at increased risk, and whether or not you need to see a specialist.
