What are heart disease symptoms?
Consultant cardiologist Ahmed Elgahamaz shares information about heart disease symptoms
The symptoms of coronary artery disease are what patients experience, and that can vary quite a lot. That chest pain is often not traditional, it’s often pressure or heaviness on the chest.
The pressure and heaviness on the chest come with exertion. The typical thing is for patients to experience that pressure on the chest as if there is a heavy weight, and that weight comes when they exert themselves. It occurs when they start to do something where the heart starts to work a little bit harder. It often is relieved as soon as they rest or slow down.
However, only 50% of patients experience chest pain. The other 50% will experience breathlessness, tiredness or inability to do things where they can’t keep up with whatever they used to do.
Sometimes it’s completely silent, which is why it’s very difficult for patients to make sense of the symptoms they have and to pinpoint whether it is chorionic artery disease or simply something else which is not relevant or not important.
