How do you know if your heart palpitations are serious?

Consultant cardiologist Dr. Navin Chandra explains how do you know if your heart palpitations are serious and need a check up.

It can be tricky to know if palpitations that you suffer are serious or not. Palpitations can be very common and are very normal in a lot of circumstances. However, the time that I think you should worry about palpitations, first and foremost is, if you’re worried about them yourself.

You ultimately, as the patient, will know yourself a lot better than any doctor will, and if you’re concerned about the palpitations you’re feeling, it’s always worth getting it checked out.

Specifically, I’m more concerned when I hear about palpitations if they’re prolonged. If they are not going away with rest, and get worse in fact, over a period of time. If they’re happening more and more frequently, and happening several times a day. If they’re associated with other symptoms as well, like chest tightness, breathlessness, dizziness or even blackouts. That would perhaps get alarm bells ringing for me as a cardiologist, and I certainly want to evaluate you in a more detailed way to understand what those palpitations mean from a heart perspective.

I strongly urge you to take our heart disease online self-test to assess your risk of developing heart disease in the future. It will take you less than five minutes and will give you a good idea if you are at increased risk and whether or not you need to see a specialist.
